machinima vs machinima
Male Restroom Etiquette
Returning to ACMI for its second year, the Machinima Film Festival (24-25 February) will feature many of the genre's best known international names coming to Melbourne to present and talk about their films in person.
Award-winning filmmakers attending the event include Eddo Stern (USA), Jessica Hutchins (USA), Gus Sorola (USA), Fredrich Kirschner (Austria) and Australians Jacqui Turnure and Peter Rasmussen.
ACMI is also pleased to welcome back Machinima Film Festival director and Executive Director of the Machinima Academy of Arts & Sciences, Paul Marino.
Machinima is a revolutionary new breed of animated filmmaking that uses popular video games like Halo 2 and The Sims 2 as source material for entirely new and often subversive works.
Highlights at this year's festival include:
Australian Cinema Premiere of Red vs. Blue Season 4 + post-screening Q&A with Rooster Teeth's Gus Sorola Sunday 25 February 2pm

Machinima Film Festival Showcase Saturday 24 February 11am - 7pm
A full day of highlights from the international Machinima Film Festival (New York).
ACMI's Machinima Film Festival Showcase will be screening the most outstanding new Machinima from around the world, with special appearances by international filmmakers.
Screening highlights:
Male Restroom Etiquette (Phil Rice, USA, The Sims 2) Included in Animation World Magazine "Best of the Web" 2007 showcase, Male Restroom Etiquette is a hilarious parody of 1950s educational films created using characters and sets from The Sims 2. After appearing on the front page of YouTube for one day, the video went from 250,000 views to more than a million. Says one bewildered but grateful viewer on the Machinima Premiere website:
I simply assumed that "things" worked themselves out in a male restroom - I had no idea there was such an important code of behaviour and that by violating that code we essentially face national disaster on an unprecedented scale... Thank you, Mr. Overman, for helping me understand my own inchoate feelings while in a male restroom. Now I know the price for failing to heed the call of the civilized man.
The Adventures of Bill & John: Danger Attacks at Dawn (KBS Productions, France, Lock on: Modern Air Combat) This Top Gun-meets-Dr Strangelove comedy about the two maverick pilots of dubious skills and ability was most awarded film at the 2006 Mackie Awards (Machinima's version of the Oscars) and now you can catch it at ACMI on the big screen!
Edge of Remorse (Riot Films, USA, World of Warcraft)
An outstanding example of Machinima produced using the World of Warcraft game and winner of Best Direction, 2006 Mackie Awards.
Talks / Presentations:
The showcase day will also include a panel discussion on writing for Machinima chaired by author (Writing Your Screenplay) and Script Editor (Chopper) Lisa Dethridge. International guests Eddo Stern and Jessica Hutchins will present their work Darkgame and the machinima Landlord Vigilante and talk about the politics of hacking and modifying computer games to create machinima. Paul Marino, Eddo Stern and Chris Dodds (selectparks) will talk about the unique cultural phenomenon of MMOG Machinima - films generated through Massively Multiplayer Online games.
