Open for entertainment
Experience the new ACMI at our Open Day
Explore the ultimate entertainment destination at our free Open Day.
Whether you're a film fanatic, a TV tragic, a gamer geek, a parent under pressure to find some school holiday fun, or a visitor to Melbourne, there's something to enthrall you in ACMIs new suite of facilities and programs.
The cornerstone of ACMI's transformation is Screen Worlds, an immersive and interactive exhibition charting the past, present and future of the moving image, from an Australian perspective but within an international context.
We're showing off Screen Worlds and our other new and improved facilities and programs at our Open Day, a free family day of exhibitions, workshops, talks and tours, on Sunday 20 September. We've even just announced a special appearance by ABC TV's Bananas in Pyjamas! For the full Open Day program, click here.
But if you thought that was it, guess again! Screen Worlds is only one of the new experiences on offer. In less than a year, ACMI's galleries have jumped from one to three in number. One of the new spaces, Gallery 2, is set to house a fresh and innovative program of works from Australian and international moving image makers, all year round.
Gallery 2 debuts with Hollywood Remix, an exhibition of three filmic works that take direction from the Hollywood narrative but transform our experience and understanding of plot and genre in film.
The first two works Outer Space and Alone. Life Wastes Andy Hardy both use forensic editing and reprocessing techniques to stretch and cut deeply into the surface of film, revealing layers of unsettling emotions repressed inside their stories. The third, Fast Film, tears through an action-packed history of Hollywood highlights in a cut-up collage pastiche. More on Gallery 2's program here.
Another addition to our suite of unique experiences is the Video Garden, comprising more than a dozen biomorphic pods scattered around the Flinders Street perimeter of ACMI. Each green blob-like pod features a screen showing new interactive works from prominent and emerging artists.
At opening, the Video Garden will showcase works by Melbourne artists including the Lycette Bros., Benjamin Ducroz, Jean Poole and Tamsin Sharp, in a curated package called Random Encounters. Another pod, known as The Earwigger, will broadcast overheard conversations about favourite screen moments to passers by.
And that's just a snapshot of the new spaces ready for you to explore from this Sunday 20 September, our special ACMI Open Day, just in time for school holidays.
