| Disengagement |
In this powerful contemporary drama from Israel's most celebrated filmmaker, Amos Gitai (
Kadosh, Kippur), the luminous Juliette Binoche stars as Ana, a French woman who is reunited with her younger Israeli half-brother, Uli (
Gitai regular Liron Levo), following the death of their father.
Summoned to his home in France for the funeral, Ana is compelled to follow her father's last wishes and returns to Israel to search for the child she gave up twenty years earlier. Eventually arriving there with Uli during the period of the Israeli disengagement from the Gaza Strip, Ana comes face to face with the county's present reality as she struggles to re-engage with her own personal history.
Passionate, controversial and always engaging,
Disengagement is as much a moving story about loss and connection as it is about two characters: one an accidental witness to history, the other a cautious participant in it. The star-studded cast includes Jeanne Moreau, Hiam Abbass and Hans Zilschler.
"Clearly the work of a great filmmaker at the peak of his considerable powers" is how
The Jewish Week (US) described it.
