| Letters to Jenny |
The continuing vitality of contemporary Spanish filmmaking can be seen in this compelling film that tells not one but two stories of life and love.
It is the story of a mother, Laura, whose love for her daughter, Jenny, is so close that, in the face of not being there for her in the future, she writes a series of letters through which she hopes to be present in some way for her daughter at key moments throughout her life. It is also the twin story of Jenny herself - and what she makes of her mother's advice - from her light-hearted adolescence in a close-knit Jewish family to an enviable young adulthood in her native Catalonia.
This is a marvellous journey that takes her from a fairytale bat mitzvah to the hustle and, finally, centring calm of present-day Jerusalem. Beautifully photographed and handsomely directed by Diego Musiak, this moving film tugs deeply at the ties that bind in surprising new ways.
