One Day You'll Understand
Veteran Israeli filmmaker Amos Gitai's newest film is as moving as it is profound. First screened at this year's Berlin Film Festival, and at a swag of major international festivals since, it explores nagging questions thrown up by the past.

A successful Parisian businessman, Victor recalls that his mother Rivka has never been able to bring herself to speak about many things. Raised a Catholic like his father, Victor realises how little he and his sister Tania really know about their mother's wartime past. Spurred on by current events, he tries to put together the missing pieces of his family history, and travels with his wife and children to the tiny French village where his grandparents and mother used to live, in the hope of finding some answers.

Gitai has made some truly compelling films, including Kaddosh, Kippur and Disengagement, but he may never have made one as graceful, as lucid and moving as this.
