In this extraordinary documentary, French priest Father Patrick Desbois and his interfaith team of researchers, criss-cross present day Ukraine in order to piece together what happened there during the Holocaust.
After Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, as many as 1.5 million Ukrainian Jews were murdered, mainly by the infamous Einsatzgruppen (killing teams of motorized SS troops that followed the Wehrmacht as they swept through), assisted by local and other auxiliaries, including the Wehrmacht. But until recently little was known about these atrocities and their staggering scale.
In his tireless search to document the genocide, Father Desbois visits the remotest corners of the country. Witnesses come forward - hesitantly at first, urged on by Catholic bishops. As it happens, they turn out to be more comfortable recounting what they saw to church officials than to others. The result is a fascinating, harrowing journey into the most terrible darkness of the twentieth century.
