Yoji Yamada's dramatick film tells the story of Shinjiro, a young samurai employed as a poison taster for his clan who enjoys a peaceful life with his beautiful wife, Kayo. His dreams of opening a kendo school are shattered when he tragically loses his eyesight after being poisoned.
Feeling useless, Shinjiro believes suicide is his only recourse, but his loving wife intervenes. Believing it to be the only way to maintain their income and household name, Kayo gives herself to Shinjiro's superior, Shimada.
