flight from death: the quest for immortality
Popcorn Taxi & ACMI presents:
Flight from Death: The Quest for Immortality (US)
Mankind. The only species that knows it's doomed.
From the very moment of birth, death is a reality that every living creature will inevitably experience - but what is death, really?
In this mind-blowing documentary narrated by acclaimed actor Gabriel Byrne, Flight from Death picks up on the theories of late cultural anthropologist Ernest Becker, who postulated that fear of death - "death anxiety"- was a primary motivator of human behaviour, especially in regards to aggression and violence.
An intriguing investigation into humankind's relationship with death, Flight from Death is the culmination of many years of research and shooting in locations such as Egypt, Israel, Guyana, Mexico, Greece, and China, providing a definitive study of the ultimate question that each one of us must face.
Interviewing an amazing cast of scholars, authors, philosophers, and researchers, the film also examines the research of a group of social psychologists, who, over the last twenty-five years, have conducted over 300 laboratory studies which show that reminders of death on a subconscious level inspire people to gravitate towards those who they see as culturally similar and to lash out at those who are different, particularly those with differing religious beliefs.
"Flight from Death is not an easy movie to review, because it's not an easy movie to watch. There's a lot going on in it, including, but not limited to: an examination of the ideas of cultural anthropologist Ernest Becker, an explanation of the origins of human culture, ruminations on mortality, discussions of the conflict in the Middle East and the September 11 attacks, and a summation of where the human race stands at the beginning of the 21st century. It's a complex, challenging film; probably one of the most ambitious documentaries ever made, and without a doubt, something that every thinking moviegoer should see. "So, 85 minutes later, I walked out of the theatre with a head full of ideas, totally enlightened ...it most always takes a near death experience for this kind of transformation to take place inside someone, but let me recommend this documentary instead - it can be just as thought-provoking without all that danger and tragedy."
