everything from gumby to games

ACMI has a huge program of film and videogame activities to keep your children entertained every day during the school holidays.

Kids' Flicks

With session prices ranging from Free to just $5, ACMI's School Holiday Kids' Flicks program is a must for pint size movie lovers and their parents!

Each weekday morning at 11am the Free Animated Kids Flicks program features classic stories by Hans Christian Anderson (The Ugly Duckling) and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (The Little Prince) as well as the award-winning Canadian animated short The Sand Castle. Animated Kids Flicks sessions last approx 1 hour, and are all G-rated films, so are great for younger children with short attention spans. Free entry.

Then in the afternoons, kids can enjoy the adventures of Gumby and his pliable pals in The Gumby Movie (rated G), screening daily at 1pm for a limited two week season (March 24 - April 4, excluding weekends). The film follows Gumby and his posse as they embark upon their greatest adventure: thwarting the plans of the Blockheads who threaten to ruin Gumby's benefit concert by replacing the entire city of Clokeytown with robots (of course). All tickets are $5.

Our regular Sunday Kids' Flicks continues throughout the school holidays with children's films screening at 10.30am and 1pm.

On Sunday 30 March and Sunday 6 April, we screen the Australian premiere of the Komaneko - the Curious Cat a delightful stop-motion animated feature from Japan.  Komaneko is a burgeoning animator who creates her own puppets and sets and films them in stop-motion style. She has a series of adventures with her friends Radi-Bo, a ghost, and a Bigfoot-like creature whom she tries to film with her 8mm camera.

On Sunday 13 April, we celebrate the 80th birthday of Shirley Temple, screening the classic musical Captain January (1936). The fabulously talented Shirley Temple - one of the most famous child stars of all time - plays Star, a child of divorced parents who is looked after by the crusty but lovable lighthouse keeper Captain January (Guy Kibbee). One of Temple's best films, Captain January is most memorable for At the Codfish Ball, her singing-dancing duet with Buddy Ebsen.

Game On

Game On is the world's largest and most comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the history and future of video games and gaming culture, with over 120 of the most famous video games ever made, all playable, and all in one place - the ACMI Screen Gallery.

Introduce your kids to such classic games as Space Invaders and Pong (they may have not been born when they first hit the arcades but we guarantee they won't take long to pick them up), then let them show you the finer points of the Japanese dancing game Dance Dance Revolution, the wannabe rock star antics of Guitar Hero or Nintendo Wii Tennis.

While older children will especially love this exhibition, we also have a dedicated kids games section perfect for younger children which include such playable games as Hey You! Pikachu (Nintendo 64), Cookie Monster Munch (Atari VCS) and Bob the Builder (Sony PlayStation).

The Game On exhibition also includes special kids activity centre which features gameplay, drawing activities, educational games and fun activity sheets.
