| Picnic at Hanging Rock |
Peter Weir's mesmerising tale of mystery and menace, set against the backdrop of the iconic Australian landscape, is adapted from Joan Lindsay's novel about a party of schoolgirls and their schoolmistress who disappear from Hanging Rock on Valentine's Day 1900.
Weir offers us many tantalising possibilities to explore: the suggestion of a time warp (sounds of the search for the girls are heard before they are lost), the dreamlike haze of a hot summers day that intimates things seem not quite as they are, and the awe-inspiring power of the Australian bush which both alienates and hypnotically absorbs.
