barney and björk unrestrained for future classics

"The uninitiated viewer can admire it simply for the majesty of its visual poetry" The New York Times
"A tapestry of sensuous, striking and sometimes disturbing imagery" Variety
"Cremasturbatory art film exercises no restraint" Village Voice

Be the first to see Matthew Barney's new collaborations with Björk and Arto Lindsay, plus revisit his epic masterpiece The Cremaster Cycle from Fri 12 May to Wed 17 May.

As part of our Future Classics program, ACMI Cinemas is proud to present the Australian premiere of Drawing Restraint 9, the spectacular cinematic collaboration between flagrantly unrestrained visual artist Matthew Barney and Icelandic songstress extraordinaire Björk.

Myth and biology collide in this creative/romantic collaboration between groundbreaking visual artist Matthew Barney (The Cremaster Cycle) and innovative musician Björk.

Aboard a whaling boat, two occidental tourists (Barney and Björk) celebrate their love in a most unusual tea ceremony below deck while a huge petroleum jelly sculpture sets above.

Barney's unique visual sensibility and sculptural motifs are illuminated by Björk's electro/orchestral soundtrack in this meditative, ecological journey through the waters of Japan's Nagasaki Bay.

And that's not the only good news for Barney fans!

Accompanying the Australian Premiere of Drawing Restraint 9 will be screenings of three additional Barney films - the Australian Premiere of Alison Chernick's documentary Matthew Barney: No Restraint (direct from its world premiere at the 2006 Berlinale), the Melbourne premiere of Barney's recent collaborative project with musician Arto Lindsay, De Lama Lamina, and for those who missed its hugely popular season at ACMI in 2004, an encore season of Barney's epic The Cremaster Cycle!
