A Barrelful of Barney at ACMI Cinemas (May Future Classics)
As part of ACMI's Future Classics program, ACMI Cinemas is proud to present the Australian Premiere of Drawing Restraint 9, the spectacular cinematic collaboration between flagrantly unrestrained visual artist Matthew Barney and Icelandic songstress extraordinaire Björk.
And that's not the only good news for Barney fans!
Accompanying the Australian Premiere of Drawing Restraint 9 will be screenings of three additional Barney films - the Australian Premiere of Alison Chernick's documentary Matthew Barney: No Restraint (direct from its world premiere at the 2006 Berlinale), the Melbourne premiere of Barney's recent collaborative project with musician Arto Lindsay, De Lama Lamina and for those who missed its hugely popular season at ACMI in 2004, an encore season of Barney's epic The Cremaster Cycle!
About Drawing Restraint 9 Myth and biology collide in this creative/romantic collaboration between groundbreaking visual artist Matthew Barney (The Cremaster Cycle) and innovative musician Björk. Aboard a whaling boat, two occidental tourists (Barney and Björk) celebrate their love in a most unusual tea ceremony below deck while a huge petroleum jelly sculpture sets above. Barney's unique visual sensibility and sculptural motifs are illuminated by Björk's electro/orchestral soundtrack in this meditative, ecological journey through the waters of Japan's Nagasaki Bay. "Visually spellbinding" New York Times

Restoration of Black Narcissus (1947) screening at ACMI (May Digital Cinema)
Screening in May for ACMI's Digital Cinema program, Black Narcissus is a masterly exploration of the dangers of ambition, British reserve, and unbridled emotion. Based on the Rumer Godden novel, this superb digital restoration of Powell and Pressburger's 1947 classic follows the tortuous emotional journey of a group of Anglican nuns led by Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr), as they set up a remote convent among the bleak ruins of an abandoned Himalayan harem.
The film features superb performances, particularly from Kathleen Byron as Sister Ruth, who conceives an eroto-maniacal obsession for Dean (David Farrar). A ruggedly handsome English agent, his presence triggers a hysterical reaction among the brides of Christ. Smouldering with passion, madness and brooding eroticism, the emotional crescendo builds steadily throughout the film to a shattering climax.
"Run, don't walk to see this 1947 classic from Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. It's an all-time top 10 favourite of mine and seeing it digitally restored on the big screen brings a sugar-rush of pleasure.' Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
BLACK NARCISSUS SCREENING DATES: Fri 5 May 7pm, Sat 6 May 9pm & Sun 7 May 5.30pm ACMI Cinemas, Federation Square, Melbourne
