correspondences: víctor erice and abbas kiarostami now open

Two Filmmakers, Two Cultures, And A Dialogue That Brought Them Together

Correspondences: Victor Erice and Abbas Kiarostami

Bringing together the work of two visionaries of independent cinema, the internationally acclaimed visual arts exhibition Correspondences: Víctor Erice and Abbas Kiarostami is now on display in an exclusive season at Melbourne's Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).

Born within a week of each other in June 1940 and both considered among the greatest living directors in the world, the work of Víctor Erice and Abbas Kiarostami are common in their minimalist style and thematic focus on childhood, landscape, silence and meditation.

A stunning survey of film, photography and paintings that convey a shared humanity, humour, and artistic parallels between each director, Correspondences culminates in a series of filmed exchanges between Erice and Kiarostami, which represent the friendship that developed between them during the making of this exhibition.

Originally curated by the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), Conrad Bodman, ACMI Head of Exhibitions, said it's a rare opportunity to experience the breadth of work by Kiarostami and Erice in a beautiful exploration of two compelling filmmakers.

'This exhibition is first and foremost a dialogue between two great artists. Both are acutely aware that cinema has everything to gain from working at the boundaries of other artfoms and although they met face-to-face only once before this exhibition, they discovered powerful parallels in their interests and ideas.' Conrad said.

To complement the exhibition, ACMI Cinemas is presenting Focus On Victor Erice & Abbas Kiarostami, running from October 2 - 12. Featuring the key works that brought each director to the world stage, the season will also present pivotal early works and short films from Kiarostami that demonstrate the artistic development of this celebrated director.

ACMI has also developed a series of public programs including talks, workshops and education programs. Full details are available online at http://www.acmi.net.au/.
