| Love to Hide |
This powerful drama is not one but two stories of converging lives in wartorn France.
Set in 1942, the film centres on a Jewish girl, Sarah Morgenstern, who flees to Paris from Alsace with her family, hoping to find safe passage to England. There, she desperately seeks refuge with her childhood sweetheart, Jean, and his companion, Philippe, unaware that they are lovers.
At great risk to themselves, and in constant fear of their secret being exposed, the altruistic Jean and hard-living Philippe find false papers and work for Sarah at a family laundry. But events take a dramatic turn when Jean is falsely denounced.
From this fraught situation, director Christian Faure plunges the viewer into the midst of occupied Paris, where Jean, Philippe and Sarah navigate a treacherous path through an anti-Semitic netherworld of everyday collaboration.
With Jérémie Renier (France's hottest young actor), Bruno Todeschini and Louise Monot.
Australian premiere.
