Heralded by the New York Times as 'a rousing sensation', Volver stars Penelope Cruz in her highly anticipated return to Spanish language film.

Volver has generated a huge buzz on the international festival circuit with speculation mounting that it will ultimately hand Almodóvar his second Oscar for Best Foreign Language film in next year's Academy Awards.

Cruz plays a feisty hardworking woman with a teenage daughter, whose life is turned upside down by the reappearance of her dead mother, played by Almodóvar's original muse, Carmen Maura.

The beloved director and his glorious heroines are at the absolute height of their talents in Volver.

Beautifully photographed by regular collaborator Jose Luis Alcaine, Almodóvar's  touching love-letter to mothers is a hugely entertaining and enchanting melodrama that impresses long after the credits roll.

Volver won Best Screenplay for Almodóvar and Best Actress for its entire female ensemble cast when it premiered at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.

The film then won the FIPRESCI Film of the Year at the 2006 San Sebastian Film festival.

It is currently leading the nomination count at the European Film Awards with six nominations (a tie with German film The Lives of Others), including nominations for Best European Film Of The Year, Best Director (Almodóvar ) and Best Actress (Cruz).

Volver will be released in cinemas just before Christmas, but for those who can't wait that long, an exclusive advance preview will screen at ACMI Cinemas this Friday 17 November at 7pm as the opening night film for ACMI's new cinema season Focus on Pedro Almodóvar (17 to 21 November).

Focus on Pedro Almodóvar will screen the director's most celebrated films from his 30-year career, including High Heels, What Have I Done to Deserve This, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Kika, Live Flesh and All About My Mother, along with the special advance preview of Volver.

After its Melbourne season, Focus on Pedro Almodóvar will tour to Sydney (24 to 27 November at Dendy Opera Quays) and Brisbane (30 November to 4 December at Dendy Portside).
