| Favela Rising |
Voted Best Film of 2005 by the International Documentary Association, this is the real-life story of Anderson Sa, former drug-trafficker turned social revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro's toughest favela (slum).
Sa is the founder and leader of 'Afro-Reggae', a movement which mixes hip-hop and batucada music with capoeira dance to bring together the local community of the favela (and in particular young people) to counteract the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by police corruption.
By turns inspiring and heartbreaking, this is a fascinating portrait of a true revolutionary.
