australia on screen at acmi

This Australia Day weekend, ACMI brings to the big screen a selection of Aussie productions in a cinematic celebration of the many diverse facets of our culture.

On Saturday, ACMI teams up with Melbourne's premier gay and lesbian arts festival, the 2008 Midsummer festival, for the presentation of some Aussie queer film rarities in Classic Queer Shorts.

Also screening is a new local documentary, Liyarn Ngam, presented by satirist Brian Dawe. Liyarn Ngam tells personal stories of injustices against the Yawuru indigenous community of the West Kimberly region, as recounted by English actor Pete Postlethwaite.

On Sunday, bask in the Oz rock festival glory that was Sunbury. Held each Australia Day between 1972 and 1975, the Sunbury Festival was the high water mark of '70s Australian rock 'n' roll. This documentary captures the excitement of the first festival in 1972, featuring Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs, Max Meritt and the Meteors and other icons of the era.

Enjoy the day off on Monday with The Overlanders, a 1946 production staring Australian action star Chips Rafferty. Based on a true story, the script was specifically selected for adaptation to film as a morale-booster for post-war Australian audiences.

Full details of our Australia Day weekend screenings, presented as part of our Australian Perspectives program, are available here.
