Two young girls, Satsuki and Mei, move with their father to the country while their sick mother remains in hospital.
To the girls' delighted surprise, they find they share their new home with some rather unusual creatures, including a giant furry being that only they can see, called Totoro. When the girls decide to visit their mother, Totoro becomes a devoted guide and ally.
