peter jackson's 'braindead' screening friday 13 as part of acmi's new cult movie program 'freaky fridays'
Do you like your movies obscure, anti-establishment, obscure, outrageous, or the so-bad-it's-good?? Then we recommend you check out Freaky Fridays, ACMI's new cult cinema program, happening 10pm Friday nights at ACMI Cinemas.
Just what defines a cult movie?
"According to Danny Peary in his comprehensive "Cult Movies" book series, a cult movie is a film that attracts a small but devoted group of obsessive followers or one that has remained popular over successive years amongst an often small group of fans. These films, by their very nature, do not necessarily reach a large portion of the movie-going audience because of their often quirky subject matter.
Almost always cult films are unusual, unconventional, and sometimes controversial films that are usually watched over and over again by their admirers. Sometimes-but not always-these movies were initially forgotten and later rediscovered and hailed as masterpieces." www.pajiba.com
A highly dynamic blending of horror, outrageous comedy and romance, Braindead is the ultimate zombie-comedy-splatter fest, showcasing the early talents of Peter Jackson - now world renknowned as the man behind the Lord of Rings Trilogy.
Given its cult movie status, ACMI did a google search to see what the fans have to saw - and boy, has this film inspired many impassioned (and funny) internet ramblings.
Here's some of our favourites (that are fit to print):
"...gore classic featuring an ***-kicking priest, a grandmother swallowing a cat whole, a house full of zombies, and a lawnmower." KFOUR Channel News
"Splat-tacular...This film has great credit in taking little of the zombie horror-fest seriously. It's so freakin' hilarious that I was laughing uncontrollably, all the while watching this movie through my fingers.." Mutant Reviewers from Hell
One of the true classics of splatterdom. Sickeningly wonderful." E-film critic
"...it's hard to believe that the man who brought us the epic Lord of the Rings and the hauntingly disturbing Heavenly Creatures is responsible for one of the biggest gorefests of all times. I wish I could say that I loved it, but at the risk of offending every fanboy out there, I'm afraid I have a red caro-syrup covered bone to pick with it" E-film critic (a different reviewer)
"Things I learnt from this movie...If mom's face is peeling off use rubber cement....Zombies can get knocked up.... Gardening tools are very effective against zombies, as are lawn gnomes." Badmovies.org
Coming up in the Freaky Friday series in future weeks: The Honeymoon Killers, The Curse of Frankenstein, Valley of the Dolls and animated feature Heavy Metal.
