Carol (Julianne Moore), a housewife living in a bubble of antiseptic privilege, begins showing symptoms of a peculiar malaise. Attributing to them environmental toxins, she subsequently undergoes treatment at the morally suspect Wrenwood.
As Carol becomes sicker, we begin to see everything around her as potentially harmful.
Haynes' insightful and darkly comical intellectual horror film grapples with the greater idea that the whole of modern society is diseased, and that we can suddenly and inexplicably become allergic to the twentieth century.
