The Tenants
A compelling and long-overdue screen adaptation of the late Bernard Malamud's 1971 classic novel. Set in New York in the early 1970s, it tells the story of the uneasy relationship between two men: one white and Jewish; the other black.

The sole tenant in a rundown tenement, Harry Lesser is struggling to finish his third novel. However, his solitary pursuit of the sublime grows complicated when Willie Spearmint, an aspiring writer, starts squatting in the building.

A precarious apprenticeship soon develops, fraught with mutual distrust and continually teetering between inquisitiveness, respect and contempt. Their uneasy peace is disturbed by the presence of Willie's Jewish girlfriend, Irene, and the attempts of their landlord to evict both men and demolish the building.

Bernard Malamud (1914-1986) has long-reigned as one of the greatest Jewish- American novelists of the past century. This adaptation uncannily captures Malamud's unerring sense of time and place, bringing to screen some of the most memorable characters that populate his best novels.

Australian premiere.
