acmi welcomes new head of film programs

The Australian Centre for the Moving Image announced the appointment of Richard Sowada as Head of Film Programs.

The Founder and Director of the Revelation Perth International Film Festival since 1997, Richard is a well-known name in the Australian and international film industry, and has rapidly gained a reputation as one of Australia's most respected independent film curators and screen event organisers.

A passionate advocate of cinema, with a finely honed nose for popular culture, Sowada built up the Revelation Perth International Film Festival, in just eight years, from a small vibrant grass-roots event in the basement back room of a local Perth music venue, to the city's flagship film festival and a major Australian cultural event with an acclaimed national and international profile.

Tony Sweeney, Director, ACMI said, "We are incredibly excited to have someone as dynamic as Richard Sowada as ACMI's new Head of Film Programs.  He is a true 'force' - his work in creating and building the Revelation Perth International Film Festival shows an unrivalled level of vision, commitment, and an unquenchable passion for cinema.

"His experience and networks in the Australian and international film industry makes him the ideal person to continue to develop the already critically acclaimed Australian and international film programs presented at ACMI. I am looking forward to working with Richard to further cement ACMI's reputation as one of the shining lights on the Australian film culture landscape."

As well as directing the Revelation Perth International Film Festival, Sowada has also worked as consultant for local and national screen agencies as project assessor and project/curation consultant including the Australian Film Commission, the National Film and Sound Archive, ScreenWest and others.

"As a premiere screen culture organisation in this country, ACMI's programs contribute directly to creating a vibrant film culture both in terms of production and audiences," say Sowada. "It's a wonderful creative opportunity and for a lover and student of all facets of the industry, its an invigorating environment to work in. I can't wait to get started!"

Richard Sowada will commence his new position at ACMI on Monday 2 October.
