Smiley is a mischievous country schoolboy who, spurred on by the taunts of his more privileged schoolmates, determines to save enough money to buy a bicycle and become the 'speed king' of Murrumbilla.

Ten-year-old Brisbane boy Colin Petersen is superb as the lovable larrikin (although his film career ended after two more features, he later re-emerged in the sixties as the Bee Gees drummer).

This enormously popular children's adventure was shot entirely on location in Camden, Gundy and Rossgole in country New South Wales, and features a sterling support cast including Ralph Richardson, Chips Rafferty and Reg Lye.
