Benham Disks by Doug... nemax@getnet.com

One of a number of spinning disk illusions. The Benham disk produces a colour illusion from a black and white disk.

All right, I went to the library tonight... I guess they had changed over computer systems and had to not include some old periodicals... but I found the article from the hard bound periodical listings... There were two significant articles that I found... the first is in Popular Electronics October 1968 entitled, "Color TV - That Isn't" by Lawrence R. Griffin In it is described the principles involved in placing color onto black and white TV transmissions... It also goes into some history behind the Benham disk. The concept was also forwarded by a German physicist named Gustav T. Fechner in 1838...Anyways, I have attempted to re-create a drawing of the Benham disk (...)

The other article which I found was in the August edition of Popular Science which talks more about how popular this B & W phenomenon will become until full color TV is widely available... I don't think this ever really caught on... It does, however, give a US patent #3,311,699 for this device... That may be another place to look...

Hopefully this will help your research a bit... Regards, Doug
