The Lumière Brothers, c.1896

From the beginning, the Lumière Brothers' approach to filmmaking was more of an effort to reproduce reality, than to tell a story. The body of their work represents captured moments of real life, and is distinctly different from other early film pioneers such as Thomas Edison and George Méliès who immediately saw film's ability to change reality.

Perhaps this is why Louis Lumière saw no future in the medium - he expected the novelty of watching images on a screen that could be seen just as easily by walking outside and opening one's eyes to wear off as time progressed.
