An Overview

In early 1995 I commenced a Masters Degree by Project with RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia with the goal of constructing a prototype, interactive, online audio broadcast (radio) service.

This website, Adventures in CyberSound, was developed to document my research (on the history of radio and the related media services of telegraphy, telephony, facsimile, television, photography and cinema), and act as a presentation platform for the project submission.

In May 1996 I developed the prototype into a 'real world' service for Radio Australia, the international broadcasting service of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and in December 1996, to take account of the expansion of the project, my studies were upgraded to Doctoral level.

On December 21, 1998 Adventures in CyberSound was defended over a four point, national and international phone linkup. The examiners were Drs Dale Spender and Patricia Gillard (Australia) and Dr Michael Ameigh (USA).

Several weeks prior to this date, each examiner had been supplied with a 'traditional' paper version of the 'Research Report' plus a multi-platform CDROM 'capture' of the research site.

The CDROM as well as containing a 'hypertext' version of the Research Report also contained (dependent on the examiner having a 'live' internet connection), active hyperlinks to the project site Radio Australia Online.

The result, three passes without modification, was ratified by the RMIT Higher Degrees Committee on February 5, 1999 and I graduated on June 9, 1999

In May 1999, I was appointed as an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering at Monash University, also in Melbourne, to work on interactive high definition digital television development at the Center for Telecommunications and Information Engineering.

My research will now consist of two parts:

Adventures in Cybersound - a continuing study of our communications history

Visioneering the Future - a NEW study of interactive, high definition digital television
