To whom it may concern
I appreciate the chance to hear Australian news via the Internet on the World
Radio Network. The reception is very good and there are no difficulties
compared with Short Wave Radio. I would like to be able to listen to Sports
news. I realise that there are problems catering for the diverse sporting
interests of Australians especially during the Southern Winter with Aussie
Rules or Rugby. Would it be possible to have a separate
segment devoted to Sporting News that doesn't need to be appended to news of a
more General nature. Thank you for the services that Radio Australia provide.

Dear Team,
Congratulations on joining the Internet. It is a fantastic way for theWorld to
communicate.
I listen to Radio Australia nearly everyday and most of your frequencies come
through loud and clear 24 hours a day here in New Zealand. I heard your show on
Sunday 12th May 1996 at 0400 hrs GMT on 13.605mhz. This frequency and 15.415
are the best received here in Dunedin, New Zealand.
I receive your latest broadcast schedule from the Australian Embassy in New
Zealand each time a new one is produced. Therefore it may be best NOT to
put me on your mailing list until the Embassy stops sending them to me. I
will contact Radio Australia when this happens.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers for now.

Found the web site and down loaded the Frequency guide file. In fact pass on a
compliment or to whoever set this page up. Just text and simple. We get so many
fancy graphics on the net today we spend a fortune on telephone line charge
time downloading them.
Here in Indonesia we pay by the minute. No such thing as a local timeless local
call. Rate for me is around 30 cents Australian per minute peak rate and 10
cents Australian per minute off peak. Unfortunately I live out of the Denpasar
zone so it is like a simple STD call. Real local rates are 10 and 5 cents
respectively.
Any way as I do not have television (and do not want it either) it is good to
be connected via radio again. Here in Ubud- Bali I teach Raja Yoga 5 nights a
week, and so as this is a little like teaching people how to use there 'Colour
Radio' .... Imagination ... I am more at home with Radio Australia.
OK to use any thing I write to you all about, hardly an Intellectual property
issue...

Welcome back - glad you like being 'up on the web' at last.
Re your onpassed concerns re graphics/chinese script etc.
The way I have configured your pages is that the script is broken down into
single lines of characters (max = 12 per line) and as such load very quickly.
- NB: only the Menu pages exist at this stage.
The english text (translation) is included under each line (or set of lines
) of text for both linquistic purposes and also to function as the 'hot link'
to the actual information pages. (still in English)
I can show you the test pages working on the developmental server.
We will solve the true 'text to web' matter for the section(s) - I am working
on it but it will take time. - I have several leads to follow up this week.
In the mean time I believe we can function quite well with the process I have
created allowing for the fact that I have to 'produce' each line of text
individually.
Up to now all the complicated web stuff has been done here at home but as of
last Friday I have more RAM on my machine at RA and should be able to do more
on site.
Naturally nothing will go 'on line' without your say so but I need to try
things out to see how and where we can go with this new medium.
As I really believe in the value of the scripted text on screen (ditto for
Khmer, Viet and Thai), I am however more than happy (in this interim period)
to go through the somewhat lengthy process to make it happen.

Hi, Weather Netters
Not sure of your actual name(s) but thanks re the mail on RA and the RA
Website.
The RA Website has only been 'on line' for about 8 weeks following the
appointment of myself as the first ABC Internet Coordinator in late April.
Appointed specifically by Radio Australia, it was my brief to establish,
maintain and direct RA's 'on line' activity into the future.
We now have a skeleton of what's to come with multilingual pages that will
eventually carry text, audio and video? of RA programs both current and
archival.
I am a department of one so there is only so much that can be done in a week. (
with a tad of 'homework' thrown in to add a liitle icing to the basic cake).
It's early daze yet but we are adding content daily and with your
particular references to Innovations and Science File, it just so happens that
this weekend I am assembling pages devoted to these very programs.
From mid to late Monday (post checking on our internal server) I will be
putting up links and content to both these programs with (as available) Fact
Sheets and/or Transcripts of programs from the most current going back to the
start of this year.
As I've said before the resource allocated to all this is yours truly so please
be patient and the content will grow.
Thanks again for the compliments and 'your' links - they will be onpassed.

Hi,
I just filled in your Radio Australia internet questionnaire. There were two
questions I couldn't answer. Question 3 I answered based upon the time I have
been in Malaysia, but I first listened to RA when I lived in Shepparton, about
20 years ago.
Question 8, about Internet connections; I have a direct connnection to the
Internet, provided by my place of work. Therefore question 9 is also
irrelevant.
Finally, what about a "comments" section?
Thanks for listening,
Stephen Oakes.
P.S. I mainly listen for news, Grandstand, and occasionally music programs, but
reception isn't too good here.

I've just finished perusing your web pages, and I'm very ipressed with the ease
and simplicity that you have chosen. I found them very easy to maneuver and the
information format is also very good. I like pages that to don't require a lot
of scrolling or searching (except, of course, time and frequency schedules,
which by their nature, can't be helped), and present their info on a single
screen.

Russell, please specify a date by when the new frequency schedules will be
updated on the web, and "flash" that date on your home page. Then we can make a
note to check the web after that date. This avoids the current rather
cumbersome process of regularly checking to see whether the update has been
completed or not.
By the way, I would of thought the web frequency guide would have been
completed more quickly than the hard copy since there is no waiting for the
copy to come back from the printer etc

I am about to send you 4 (four) separate eMails (to Michael only folks -
only HTML code)
They will contain the following files...
1) << .../news/default.htm >>
which is, (apart from an abbreviation to two items) as pulled off the abc
NEWSLINK page yesterday
2) <<.../newsrael/default.htm >>
which is the 'altered' version of the same document and is the best anacronym I
can come up with to say NEWS Radio Australia English Language and then leave
us room to move to other languages eg..
newsrafr = french, newsratp = tok pisin, newsrain = indonesian, newsravn =
vietnamese
and down the track
newsrati = thai, newsrakm = khmer, newsraca = cantonese, newsrama =
mandarin
3) << .../news/328227.htm >>
which is as pulled off the abc NEWSLINK page yesterday
4) << .../newsrael/105511.htm >>
which is an 'altered' version of the NEXT document in the queue.
I have altered a different file so that you can load up the dummy menu and then
have access to two different files one 'as is' and one as 'would like to be'
Many thanks
Russ Naughton
NOTES:
the alterations are split up so as to easily deliniate where my new HTML needs
begin and end and the original HTML begins and ends.
In each case I have tried to leave as much of the old HTML as can be 'common'
to both old and new.
I am not a programmer by trade so if anything I have suggested can be better
coded, cannot work with rest of system (automation etc.) then please advise
so and alter as is required.
File structure wise, I am going to presume that all << newsra**/file#.htm
>> files will be in the same folder including the << rabanner.gif
>> . If you wish to place the << rabanner.gif >> in the
common resources folder then please adjust the <<....SRC=rabanner.gif
>> HTML accordingly. Thanks
<< rabanner.gif >> is enclosed as an attachment (you can also of
course pinch it from site. = 16k)
I believe that to clearly delineate << ra >> folder and <<
newsra** >> folder(s) they should be at same directory level - that way I
can still do a 'site' upload without affecting the files in the <<
newsra** >> folder(s)
Some specific changes to look for... (I think this is the lot?)
a. New banner << rabanner.gif >>
b. Bullet points removed to 'lighten page' for faster downloading
c. Universal time added to 'time/date stamp' in two places (body and
footer area)
d. <cite> removed on 'footer area' timestamp, I feel italicised text
on the web is too hard to read
e. actual day'name' removed - confusing when related to UT
f. on 'item' pages the second <blockquote> removed to decrease lines
of text but still leaving good margin
g. AET added in new 'footer area' plus hotlink to both top of page and ra
homepage as well as copyright
h. White background throughout and 'headline' colour common to both
'default.htm' and 'item' pages

an hour as an audio server...ha. Imagine feeding 50 people times 18K/second!
I'm sure the Radio Australia feed would be completely jammed. Maybe you could
shut down on one RF feed to fund it. There would be millions listening over the
internet. 99% of Americans would have no idea how to tune even the simplest HF
receiver. Then they wouldn't know where to find your RF feed. Internet is
another story. This place is going crazy on the internet. International
broadcasters are now just finding that out.

It's early daze yet but we are adding content daily and with your particular
references to Innovations and Science File, it just so happens that this
weekend I am assembling pages devoted to these very programs.

Sir, Madam
Radio Australia, the International Service of the Australian Broadcasting
Corporation has recently placed on its Web Site, the first of our non-English
language news services. (French)
As with our other news services, the site is fed from our state of the art
electronic newsroom system and is updated, depending on availability of new
stories, every hour.
Radio Australia's French staff combine stories from our correspondents working
in the Asia Pacific region with translations of Australian news.
The URL mentioned above is the index page with each individual story accessible
in full by clicking on the headline. Most individual stories will print out on
a single A4 page.
I am quite sure that you will find this new resource invaluable especially for
your senior students fine tuning their translation and comprehension skills.

Gentlemen,
I've just taked the grand tour of international broadcasters on the internet
which include the resources of my home county {VOA}. I am extremely impressed
with the CLARITY and ACCURACY, the neatness and the overall presentation of the
ABC home page. Your use of Real Audio is greatly appreciated. I can't seem to
find any other country's who've bothered to deploy REAL AUDIO. Your use of
graphics and the assemblage of all this information is outstanding.
Having been a ham radio operator for 20 years, and having been thrilled at
contacting your continent on numberous occasions, I can safely say, beyond a
shadow of a doubt, that the Australian character is one of grace, delight and
skill. When I joined the internet, what a delight it was to find your home
page. It beat VOA. It beat BBC. It beat everyone else listed in the
international index. If it wasn't for the implementation of Real Audio, I would
not be able to copy ABC for the terrible band conditions the bottom of this
cycle has presented us.
I think this home page has validated in my mind what I've suspected for 20
years as a ham, working VK stations. It validated that the most civilized and
technically advanced culture, and nation, we REALLY have on the face of this
planet, lies in Australia.
Having payed U.S. taxes for over 20 years, and having seen our VOA homepage
with it's limited resources, only brings to mind only such images of Charles
Darwin, landing in L.A. mistakenly and doing his research and book report from
their.
Bravo to everybody at ABC. If ET ever does fly close enough to hear our radio
waves, I hope they are tuned into ABC. I was reading your copyright notices and
think you should sue the American Broadcasting Corporation for using your
initials. It can only be viewed as slander!
And this doesn't even cover NBC; nor does it cover the Communist Broadcasting
Network CBS, nor does it cover the Communist Network News CNN.
When ever I wish to get my head clear, and hear a few notes from the human
race, I tune into ABC on Real Audio. Thank you for being there. I am truely
greatful for your CHIPPER SPIRITS and your CLEAR and CONSENSE broadcasts which
NEVER INCLUDE COMMENTARY!!!

Greetings from Brazil,
Is there a faster way I can down ABC Radio Australia "FTP-English News &
Features". At times takes me abut three hours to receive a one hour news
broadcast using RealAudio 2.0 and a 14,400 modem.
Do you know of a way that I could receive compressed file and decompress them
after I have recieved them.
Logged on time is not cheap here in Brazil and two to three hours a day can add
up to a large bill at the end of the month just to hear the Australian news.

Russ,
A big big THANK YOU to you for giving such a great tour on Saturday night. You
were absolutely perfect and gave such an informative and positive talk about
dear old Aunty. Everyone has been singing your praises and saying what a great
night it was as you gave them so much information and they were able to look
around everywhere.
I know I felt very proud of my "RA BOSS" - you have such a great presentation
and a very audible voice essential for 50-60 people! Wow, what a number turned
up, it shows how popular the ABC is with middle class suburbia! I received
comments - "I'm proud of my ABC", "I'm so pleased with my 8c a day", "It was
the best outing the Saturday Club has had for a long time". They just loved
everything about it and I know they will be telling others all this week.
Thanks so much for giving up your Saturday night, especially as you are in the
middle of preparing your "application".
I felt really elevated and it was a fabulous end to a not too pleasant day for
me. Was fun to catch up with Ros and Alistaire again - the "family" are getting
taller and taller!!!
You're a great guy and friend - nothing but the best,

To: "naughton.russell" <naughton.russell@a1.abcnet.abc.net.au>
Hello, Russell. I'm writing to you on behalf of Radio Singapore International.
Presently, we have our own web pages and we are in the process of fine-tuning
our pages. We would like to learn from Radio Australia's experience. Would you
be kind enough to share with us your experience ? I have a few questions here
and I'm sure your reply will benefit us.
1. Do you have a dedicated team to work on the pages or is it a brave "one man
mission force" ?
2. Who decide(s) what to go into the pages and how does(do) he(they) decide on
the content input ?
3. What are the figures on the access rate of your pages ? What is the response
or feedback that you receive through the Internet ?
4. How do you measure the impact of the Internet as an alternative means to
listening to your broadcast ?
5. Which are your most popular pages ?
6. Do you have programmes that go out on Real Audio ? For what duration and how
is the response to Real Audio programmes ?
7. Are there any new areas in development on your website ? What are they ?
I hope that I have not been too lengthy in my questions and that they are not
sensitive questions to ask. I would greatly appreciate your reply.
By the way, your pages are great ! I have enjoyed them.
Best regards,
Hwee Lee

Mr. Naughton,
As one who takes an interest in things Autralian, would it be possible to
include the lyrics to "Waltzing Matilda" on your FAQ page? I spotted the
reference and info re: songwriter and origin of the tune and this would be a
logical place to place the lyrics.
As a boy growing up in Hawaii, the entire class learned the song as an example
of English vernacular different countries. Perhaps you might also add a short
'glossary' following the posted lyrics to help the readers sing along with and
enjoy your tuning signal.
By the way - in the first verse, what sort of tree does the swagman camp
beneath? (that is the ONLY word from the song that I am presently missing).
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read and respond to this suggestion
and query.
Kind Regards,

WRN services - ISCAH
Dear Auntie,
As a recent and temporary ex-pat, I would like you to know how much I
appreciate the audio news service over the net. I am disappointed that here in
Iowa, USA, I cannot hear Radio Australia by short-wave. However being able to

I am pleased that WRN has its server back up and running after a technical
hitch.
As an ongoing taxpayer in Australia, you can put all of my 8 cents per day into
this (and more). Please keep it up.

Dear Radio Australia
I recently went to Nepal for three weeks. While there, I wanted to hear news
from Australia, so before I went, I printed out your South East Asia frequency
schedule from the web. (This was in mid October for my trip in November.)
Unfortunately, you changed the schedule on October 26, so I was largely without
Radio Australia while I was away.
Now I have been listening to shortwave radio for many years, and I know that
you have to change your schedules at certain times of the year for propagation
reasons. However, the web page gave no indication of when the next change was
likely to be, although I'm sure that you knew well in advance that a change
would happen in late October.
Can I suggest that your web pages include the date of the next likely change as
part of the frequency schedule. If it had done this, I could have checked after
that date, but before I left, and been able to listen to Radio Australia while
I was away.
Hope this helps to improve your Ineternet presence, which is very useful for
travellers.
