Quite often an image that I wish to use is 'sourced' in 'less than perfect condition'. The restoration usually only involves the removal of small defects such as spots and scratches plus attention to sharpness, brightness and contrast.

In the example shown below, the image of George Smith, a substantial 'fix' was required to make it match the images on the rest of the site. The rather time consuming effort was put in as it was the only picture of Smith I could find.

The steps shown, saved along the way as separate files, illustrate the process of such a major 'restoration' including the production of original artwork.

Original image as sourced from the Arthur C. Clarke website.

Drop shadow and 'colour tint' removed. Shoulder outline and shirt collar created.

Jacket 'cloned' from collar on original. Small defects on face 'spotted' out.

Shirt collar revised, tie added. Contrast and brightness altered. Re-sized to the 'standard' image height and resolution chosen for this project - 250 pixels at 72dpi.

The image 'on line' with frame, title and source and navigation hotlinks added.
