Some of the most amazing images caught on the silver screen this year have been the gravity defying kung fu sequences from the Matrix Reloaded. These were choreographed and directed by legendary Hong Kong film-maker, Yuen Woo-Ping. After a long and successful career in the Cantonese cinema, Yuen Woo-Ping became internationally famous with his martial arts work in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Fire Dragon is a 1994 Hong Kong production which finds Woo-Ping at a career peak. Along with Taiwanese superstar, Brigitte Lin (The Bride With White Hair) and a classic martial arts tale of intrigue and revenge, director Yuen Woo-Ping adds a visual and kinetic edge to the film that will leave many viewers breathless. The movie's final thirty minutes is a non-stop barrage of martial arts mayhem, which includes a spectacular action sequence involving a sea of burning oil and deadly necklaces of dynamite.
The screening on Sunday 22 June boasts a brand new 35 mm Print of Fire Dragon. The colors and sounds of this movie are rich and resonant and show just how great the Cantonese cinema was, when at its peak during the mid-1990s.
