australian premiere of sharon lockhart's pine flat
Direct from the 2006 Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals, ACMI will present the Australian premiere of Pine Flat by contemporary photographer and filmmaker Sharon Lockhart from 5-8 October.
Have you ever been captivated by the idea that a photograph can suddenly and magically come to life right before your eyes?
Set in the foothills of California's Sierra Nevada Mountain, Pine Flat is a series of visually breathtaking and intimate scenes that are a moving exploration of childhood and the American landscape.
In making this exquisite work, Lockhart "rented a cabin by a creek to escape the unforgiving pace of urban life." This cabin was in Pine Flat, a town of 300 people, about 170 miles northeast of Los Angeles, in the gorgeous foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Over four years, Lockhart befriended local children and documented their lives. Lockhart's camera follows the children with an extraordinary sense of colour, sound and composition that permeates the senses and transports the viewer into the world inside the frame.
