Gypsy and the Gentleman
This ripe regency melodrama, from Hollywood exile Joseph Losey, plots the assailing love between a wayward aristocrat Deverill (Keith Michell) and a cunning gypsy seductress Belle (Melina Mercouri), who schemes to steal his fortune.

Flamboyant costuming, blazing colours and elaborate settings all play to the "Hollywood" vision of the Gypsy. Better still, Belle's stereotypical disregard for rules and her unbridled physicality, play directly into Losey's hallmark preoccupation with themes of social order, class and sexual power, allowing the director to infuse this standard melodrama with his own unique touch.
