In Altman's acerbic, self-referential and very clever satire on the values of Hollywood filmmaking, a disgruntled screenwriter decides to exact his revenge.
Griffin Mill (Tim Robbins), a man at the top of the heap of a major Hollywood studio - and well-versed in fielding writers' pitches - gets twitchy as a series of anonymous notes threaten violence.
A hunch leads him to an out-of-town arthouse cinema and a confrontation with embittered screenwriter David Kahane (Vincent D'Onofrio), who turns out to be the least of Mill's concerns in an industry with a voracious appetite for the next box office hit.
Altman assembles a dizzying array of cameos and a supporting cast featuring Greta Scacchi, Peter Gallagher, Richard E. Grant, Fred Ward and Cynthia Stevenson.
