rediscover the spirit of true independent filmmaking
John Cassavetes
ACMI pays homage to the original maverick of American independent cinema with Focus On John Cassavetes.
From the outset, Cassavetes' approach was different and his style celebrated. His directorial debut Shadows (1959), a low budget foray into improvisational acting and directing, won the Critics Award at the Venice Film Festival, while his second independent production Faces (1968) led him to establish his own distribution company.
From there he went on to produce his most acclaimed works: A Woman Under the Influence (1974), The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) and Opening Night (1977), a legacy often referred to as his '70s masterpieces'.
As well as the rare chance to rediscover these classics works on the big screen, the season also includes the candid A Constant Forge: The Life & Times of John Cassavetes, an in-depth documentary on the filmmaker featuring interviews with cast members and collaborators.
