pure grit
Pure Shit
ACMI Cinemas, in conjunction with the AFI, is proud to blow the dust off one of the key underground films of 70s Australian cinema.
Bert Deling's Pure Shit was so Australian that its UK distributor requested the film be given English subtitles.
Almost banned on its release in 1975 - with censors insisting the title be changed to Pure S - the film follows the story of down-and-out junkies on a spree 'busting' chemists as they desperately search for chemical satisfaction.
A groundbreaking work of gritty realism, Pure Shit is a rough-and-ready account of the highs and lower-than-lows of Australian drug culture in the 1970s. From drama to the blackest of comedy, its cast of amateurs deliver honest and unpolished performances in a film that certainly deserves to be more widely known.
This special screening will be followed by what will surely be an engaging Q&A session with director Bert Deling.
Pure Shit screens as part of Australian Perspectives, Saturday November 17 at 4pm.
