| Princesas |
The latest film from Spain's Fernando León de Aranoa (Mondays in the Sun) is a bittersweet and moving story of a friendship that develops between two women working as prostitutes in Madrid.
Caye (Candela Peña - seated) is a working-class Spanish woman who hides her source of income from her family. Like many of her colleagues, she deeply resents the arrival of immigrants as potential competitiors.
One day she meets Zulema (Micaela Nevarez, standing), a Dominican prostitute who is supporting her young son, left behind in their home country with his grandmother. Despite their differences, the two become close.
With its earthy, comic realism, Princesas was one of the top local hits in Spain and was awarded 3 Goyas (Spanish Oscars), including Best New Actress for Nevarez and Best Actress for Peña.
Also featuring an original soundtrack by Manu Chau, Leon de Aranoa's insight into the many complexities of modern multicultural Spain make for a remarkable film from one of the world's most talented filmmakers.
