Phillip Noyce's laconic first feature spans nearly a decade, telling the story of the news cameramen who went out and brought the daily newsreels to an eager nation.

Bill Hunter delivers a towering performance as the central character Len Maguire, whose life is followed through the years to the point when, with the advent of television, he finds himself a man out of time.

The ingenious merging of B&W Cinesound and Movietone newsreels with the film's own colour scenes is executed seamlessly with cinematographer Vincent Monton skilfully mimicking the visual style of films of the 1940s and 1950s.
