Memory for Max, Claire, Ida and Company

This profoundly moving documentary follows the lives of eight residents in a Jewish aged care centre in Toronto.

Cinema verité pioneer Allan King employs neither narration nor staged direction. The film places us squarely among the residents and up against their immediate realities: resignation in some; anger and exasperation in others. There is also joy, humour, celebration and - just as suddenly - loss.

King encourages us to see beyond the pathology of dementia and impaired cognitive skills to reaffirm the dignity of each of his subjects.

Australian premiere.
