The Day Before I Went Away by Guo Jian
Haven't been able to get to your television or to ACMI to find out what this ARTV malarky is about? Fear not, because from this week anyone, anywhere in the world can enjoy all sixteen ARTV works online at http://www.acmi.net.au/artv.

Commissioned by ACMI and SBS Independent and created by some of Australia's finest contemporary artists, ARTV consists of a suite of remarkably diverse ad-sized gems of visually intriguing, wildly imaginative art - quite unlike standard TV fare.

All works are currently screening between programs on SBS TV and on site in ACMI's Screen Lounges.

Participating artists come from across the breadth of the country and include painters, sculptors, photographers, new media artists and even a texta artist. In almost all cases the works on screen represent the artists' first exploration of the television medium.

According to Clare Stewart, ACMI's ARTV Executive Producer, many of the participating artists found translating their different media into a television format raised intriguing questions and the resulting productions demonstrate the ingenious responses to this challenge.

'ARTV stimulates ideas about how art could appear on television, its potential to interrupt or sneakily invade regular scheduling. Working closely with sixteen of Australia's finest artists and such an adventurous broadcaster (SBS) to translate these ideas into dynamic works that are both art and television, has produced some terrific results,' said Stewart

ARTV is part of 2004: Australian Culture Now, a spectacular national survey exhibition of visual culture that represents work by more than 130 leading and emerging Australian artists.

Participating artists: Vernon Ah Kee (QLD), Daniel Crooks (VIC), Cherine Fahd (NSW), Simryn Gill (NSW), Shaun Gladwell (NSW), Helen Grace (NSW), Guo Jian (NSW), Janet Merewether (NSW), Scott Redford (QLD), Julie Rrap (NSW), Arlene TextaQueen (VIC), Hossein Valamanesh (SA), Daniel von Sturmer (VIC), Martin Walch (TAS), Craig Walsh (QLD), Guan Wei (NSW).

In addition to screening on SBS TV and on the ACMI website, ARTV is also viewable from the ACMI Screen Lounges for the duration of the 2004 exhibition at ACMI (8 June - 12 September).
