acmi presents focus on superheroes, an exclusive 5-day cinema event where anything is possible, exploding onto the big screen June 9.
***ACMI Planet news flash***
Coinciding with Holy Men in Tights!, a major international conference presented by The University of Melbourne which will bring together international experts on superhero culture from across the world, Focus on Superheroes will feature some of the big and little screen's most entertaining superhero moments: both old and new, legendary and obscure, B-grade and critically acclaimed, animated and live-action.
Focus on Superheroes will include screening introductions by various keynote speakers and participants in the conference, as well as a special forum where you can debate the pros and cons of your favourite hero with a panel of international and Australian experts.
Focus on Superheroes highlights include:
Double Dare (opening night film, repeat scrfee) - Direct from the Toronto Film festival, Amanda Micheli's action-packed documentary follows Jeannie Epper and Zoë Bell, two delightful and tough-as-nails Hollywood stuntwomen who kick ass for a living. Epper is a sixty-something pioneer of her craft, best known as Lynda Carter's stunt double in the TV series Wonder Woman, while New Zealand-born Bell broke into the industry as Lucy Lawless's stunt double in Xena: Warrior Princess before landing the job doubling Uma Thurman in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. Also features Lucy Lawless, Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino.
Superman: The Movie - a rare 35mm print of the original 1978 feature with Christopher Reeve as the Caped Crusader!
The New Original Wonder Woman - the original feature-length 1975 pilot episode from the much loved TV series starring the perfectly cast Lynda Carter in the title role. Joined by Major Steve Trevor (Lyle Waggoner), Wonder Woman sets out to battle the forces of the Third Reich.
Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe - Watch the first six episodes of this 1940s serial which chronicles the daring adventures of Flash Gordon. Containing universe-trotting action, a relentless soundtrack, and Olympic swimmer Buster Crabbe, Flash Gordon was one of the most lavish and big-budgeted serials of Hollywood's Golden Age.
Santos Vs the Martians - Mexico's wrestling superhero El Santo (who has starred in some 50 B-films during his 25 year cinematic career) confronts Martian invaders intent on destroying Planet Earth! Featuring crazy dialogue, garish costume set pieces and plenty of wrestling action, it's guaranteed to entrance all lovers of schlock!
Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law - Once a third-rate superhero, Harvey Birdman files motions, cross-examines witnesses and occasionally blasts opposing counsel with solar rays while endeavouring to get justice for his famous clients (including the likes of Shaggy, Scooby, Velma, Fred Flintstone, Yogi and Boo Boo).
Superheros Animation program - Especially curated by the Melbourne Animation Posse, enjoy a special two-part animation program featuring Merrie Melodies cartoon Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century, Super Super Man, Saddam and Osama, and episodes from some of the most popular animation superhero serials of the 60s, including Astroboy, crime fighting super-robot Gigantor, Roger Ramjet and the Powerpuff Girls (saving the world before bedtime!).
Focus on Superheroes is presented in association with the University of Melbourne
