Paths of Glory
Kirk Douglas is magnificent in this agonizing representation of the futility of war, set amongst trenches during WWI.

Most significantly, Paths of Glory demonstrated Stanley Kubrick's capacity for extolling great emotion with acute precision, propelling him into the ranks of the great directors.

The film culminates in one of the most heartbreaking scenes in Kubrick's cinema, featuring his future wife Christiane.

"A picture that will always be good, years from now. I don't have to wait 50 years to know that; I know it now." Kirk Douglas
