There are various agencies or organisations that can assist with advice on obtaining permission for use of copyright material, or in locating artists.

The following list aims to provide an introduction and is not extensive or exhaustive.

Relevant Agencies and Organisations Involved in Copyright Permission

Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) is an association of copyright owners (usually authors and publishers) of print material, set up in 1974 to act as an agent for its member publishers and authors including print journalists. On behalf of i ts membership, which is free, it administers a number of license schemes. Under these schemes users in education, business and the general community can copy legally from printed material and pay for their copying of CAL members' copyright material.

AMCOS (Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners' Society)

AMCOS represents the interests of music publishers and their writers in Australia and New Zealand and its main function is the administration of mechanical rights, or those generated from the reproduction of musical works onto CDs, tape s or other audio formats, but has an involvement in print music.

APRA (Australian Performing Right Association)

Virtually all Australian and New Zealand composers are members of (APRA), one of the most important collecting agencies for the Performing Arts area. Their database is well over 600,000 titles and 200,000 cue sheets on computer file and approximately 2 million titles on cards. As a result where the broadcasting right is concerned, the level of compliance is extremely high, though public performance still presents problems and many licensees take advantage of a self-reporting system to u nder-report relevant details in order to minimise their fees to APRA.

Sceenrights (formerly The Audio-Visual Copyright Society)

Established in January, 1990, Screenrights is one of the two most recently established of the major collecting societies. Screenrights administers the scheme which collects fees from educational institutions for the copying of televis ion and radio broadcasts.

Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA)

Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA) administers broadcast and public performance vested in sound recordings and music videos and was incorporated in 1969.

VI$COPY

VI$COPY is a relatively new collecting society which was established to license the works of Australian visual artists, including craft workers, photographers and designers. VI$COPY will also license the works whose copyright owners are members of, or affiliated with the Designs and Artists Copyright Society. Though visual material is used in multimedia it probably is of lesser significance than the other declared agencies for the community.

Designs and Artists Copyright Society (DACS)

Designs and Artists Copyright Society is a collecting society for artists and designers based in the United Kingdom. DACS may be able to assist in circumstances where VI$COPY is unable to license the use of an overseas work in Australia .

The National Association for the Visual Arts has a database of visual artists practising in Australia.

Screen Sound Australia

Screen Sound Australia (National Film and Sound Archive) can supply material from the national film and sound heritage collections, and also provides copyright information and advice.

The Australian Music Industry Directory on-line, Immedia is developing into a resource for the Performing Arts community. Though it is available in its current form only to subscribers, the 1997 material is freely accessible.

The Directory offers valuable information about key media associations, trade organisations and individuals involved in the arts industry, including free access to addresses and key information about organisations and individuals in the industry. Its directory offers wide range of categories ranging from broadcast media, arts associations, unions and trade organisations, booking agents, interactive media, to legal and business representatives, publicity and promotion specialists. Organ isations and individuals involved in arts can have their details published in the directory.

Members of the Performing Arts Community can advertise their organisations and provide their contact details on the site without cost. The site contains information that may prove invaluable for anybody involved in Performing Arts indus try with performers, directors and producers having access to a comprehensive listing of relevant organisations. The directory can be used to gather information required in preparation of an arts event, as well as multimedia productions.
