Big Fish
Presented by Gary Simmons
In his essay Meditation in a Toolshed G.K. Chesterton offered the following parable about ways of seeing. He noticed a beam of light coming through a crack. If he looked at the beam all he saw was the light. If he looked along the beam, he saw through to the garden outside.
Tim Burton's films follow the beam of light into adjacent worlds: worlds filled with heightened perception and fantastic characters who see the world in sometimes dark, sometimes fresh and uninhibited ways.
Focusing on Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and Big Fish this talk will explore Burton's strange worlds, his magical, fraught characters, and his distinctive visual style that stirs the imagination and takes the viewer into the garden outside.
