Olivier Assayas returns to the 'indie' production aesthetic of his breakout 1996 hit,
Irma Vep, in a contemporary East/West thriller featuring Michael Madsen (
Kill Bill,
Sin City) and a front and centre Asia Argento.
Espousing the virtues of a particular B movie modus operandi ('slashed budget and fast shoot, but all the benefits of complete creative freedom') the film is dramatically and visually propelled by Asia's sinuous and utterly unselfconscious physicality, an element Assayas identifies as key to his film: "the narrative was inseparable from my desire to work with Asia. She's all instinct with an uncommon intensity".
Official Selection, Cannes 2007. Melbourne premiere. Imported print.
