Based on cult author J.T. LeRoy's acclaimed 'autobiographical' short stories, Asia Argento also takes up co-writing and acting duties in her English language directorial debut.
Despite the explosive revelation on the eve of the film's U.S. release in 2006 that LeRoy was in fact a forty-something San Francisco-based writer, Laura Albert, and not a 'white trash' urchin from the South, the controversy surrounding the literary hoax in no way mitigates against the visceral power of Argento's daring film.
Shot by Eric Alan Edwards (
Kids,
My Own Private Idaho), Argento flirts with elements of Grand Guignol, but never loses sight of the put-upon child, Jeremiah, at the centre of the story. Ornella Muti, Peter Fonda and Marilyn Manson make notable cameos.
"Argento's film is a thing of heady, evil beauty. She is... a master cinematic stylist of the first order"
The Austin Chronicle.
