As the brassy mistress-on-call to King Louis XV (Rip Torn), Argento's voluptuous, flagrantly carnal Du Barry isn't above belching loudly at dinner and the odd fit of petulance. A marked contrast to the comparatively anaemic charms of the young 'Austrian' Marie Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst), struggling to assert her authority in the treacherous Royal Court of Versailles.
