Asia's first on-screen collaboration with Abel Ferrara came by way of the director's 1998 erotic, cyber-noir thriller, adapted from the William Gibson short story and also featuring Ferrara regulars, Willem Dafoe and Christopher Walken.
Critic Adrian Martin perceives the film "as a particularly inspired and tortured remake" of Hitchcock's
Notorious (1946).
"Sandii (Argento) is a more provocative heroine than Ingrid Bergman, and her mysterious fate plunges New Rose Hotel into a vortex of poetic disintegration .Rarely has the auto-destruction of the cinematic apparatus been so thrilling"
Brisbane International Film Festival, 2003.
