Burton's endearingly off-kilter sensibility finds fulsome expression in his second stop-motion feature - a rollicking gothic operetta featuring the voice talent of Johnny Depp and Emily Watson.

When Victor Van Dort (Depp) inadvertently proposes to a not-quite-breathing Miss Havisham type (Helena Bonham Carter, the titular Corpse Bride), she promptly accepts and spirits him off to the underworld to meet the family.

Key collaborator, composer Danny Elfman voices the character of Bonejangles and contributes music and lyrics.

British thespians feature in the cast, with Joanna Lumley, Richard E. Grant and Tracey Ullman all in fine voice.

"A sweet tale, not really ghoulish at all, you get used to the Corpse Bride's resident worm quite quickly" David Stratton, At the Movies
