Surviving Burbank: Short Films
1958-1976

While not aspiring to become a director, filmmaking was a way for the young Burton to get through the normality of life in Burbank. He shot Super 8 films in imitation of heroes such as Hollywood special effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen, and he made his three-minute film Houdini: The Untold Story as a means to avoid writing a 20-page book report in junior high school. Burton has used his childhood experiences growing up in Burbank as a resource for much of the work he has produced in his career.
