Midnight Juggernauts
Co-presented by Melbourne Music Week
One of the most neglected of all forms of cinema may very well be the information film. On this forgotten path there exists a virtually unseen vista of stylish films from decades past.
From 1959 until 1969, Britain's famous Rank Organisation commissioned dozens of newsreels reflecting the life of the time - Look at Life. From the jet age to new advances in science to the swinging 60s, they represent an intriguing snapshot of a moment frozen in time but with an eye on the future. Designed to screen prior to features in cinemas, they are superbly cinematic in beautiful Eastman Colour - and for today's audience, newly restored.
As if from the future but with an eye on the past, Melbourne's enigmatic Midnight Juggernauts add their special blend of film-inspired "kaleidoscopic jams" to Look at Life. These classic works will unspool amid samples, loops and inspired improvisation with a score performed live in the cinema.
The films will also be accompanied by live narration.
