Got a great idea for a microgame?

Calling all Australian game developers and artists: we want to hear your ideas for a microgame to be shown and played at ACMI from August 2026 to January 2027.

We are offering a fee of $5,000 for individuals and teams to create a microgame (short player experience) that is built for both stand-up arcade cabinets with arcade controls and for computer play. The microgames should demonstrate:

  • A connection to the theme of Remix, inspired by side-scrolling games and classic iconography from arcade and console games of the 1980s and 1990s; and/or revisit socio-cultural histories in innovative ways.
  • Playful engagement and responses to the context of ACMI as a museum of screen culture.

If successful, your microgame will be installed in public spaces across ACMI for thousands of people to see and play while visiting the space. The game will also enter into the ACMI collection.

Whether you have a microgame already in development or an idea for a brand-new microgame – all are eligible for proposal. Don’t forget, your game must be appropriate for public spaces. Games should adhere to the technical specifications for an arcade game outlined below. Applications will be reviewed and selected by representatives from ACMI and Now or Never.

Applications closed at 5pm on Monday 18 May 2026.

Technical specifications

Games should run on both a Windows 11 operating system and a Raspberry Pi 5 level PC. The Raspberry Pi will be connected to a J-PAC-C control board, which will be connected to the arcade buttons and joystick via a JAMMA Harness.

Arcade specifications:

  • Standup Arcade cabinet
  • 26" LCD Screen (Landscape 16:9)
  • Either 1 or 2 Player option available (The arcade has two sets of controls. If single player, the buttons and joystick will be removed and capped to avoid confusion.)
  • Joystick
  • 6 action buttons

Eligibility - who can apply?

We encourage applications from First Nations People, people from culturally diverse backgrounds, Deaf and Disabled people and people from the LGBTIQA+ community.

You must be an Australian game developer or artist to apply for this commission. To be classified as an Australian artist, you must either be:

  • born in Australia
  • an Australian citizen
  • living in Australia as an approved temporary resident for a minimum of two year, and/or a permanent resident of Australia.

The maker may be living in Australia or overseas as long as at least one of the above stated criteria are demonstrable. Where the game is produced by collaboration, no less than fifty percent of the contributors must meet the above criteria.

Applicants will need to provide:

  • a description of the microgame
  • a list of all the creatives and collaborators working on the microgame
  • a pitch deck that outlines concept, playable elements, visual treatment and design elements
  • examples of previous work
  • a one-page CV
  • a budget for the microgame
  • a production timeline with milestones.

Selection criteria

Microgames will be selected by the ACMI selection committee on the following criteria:

  • Interesting and innovative approach to the theme Remix, responding to side-scrolling games that draw inspiration from brands, retro games, classic iconography and/or revisit socio-cultural histories in innovative ways.
  • Legible to a wide variety of visitors in terms of game design, playability, duration and mechanics.
  • Playful, thoughtful responses to the context of ACMI as a museum of screen culture.
  • Technical viability.
  • Previous experience of applicant(s).
